Building a board pack that operations will sign
Variance reports fail when only finance can read them. A short shared vocabulary keeps the board meeting short.
The fastest board meetings we witness share one trait: operations recognised the variance story before the pack was printed. That recognition is earned in the draft workshop, not in the slide design.
What belongs on page one
- Period and plant boundary
- Top three variance drivers with nouns (material names, work centres, revision numbers)
- One sentence on what was ruled out
Charts without tickets belong in an appendix, if anywhere.
What to leave out
Generic language about “cost discipline” or “operational excellence.” If a finding needs those words to sound important, the evidence is not ready.
Mild disagreement is useful
If the plant disputes a cause, record the dispute and the evidence both sides accept. Boards prefer an honest open item to a forced consensus that unravels in the corridor afterward.
